Subject: Congratulations and thanks for the memories...

Dear Mr. Fisk,
Although I wasn't actually born in Chuqui, I lived there from 1966 till 1970 and I've got the best memories of my childhood in
the Chilex School and Campamento Americano. I just knew about this website from Pancho Mualim II, currently Country
Chairman for Shell.
Browsing through the messages sent to you, many names flashbacked in my heart...
I would love to know about my friends and classmates from those times. Here's what I currently know regarding some of
them:
Claudio Araya Chellew (son of Valerie Chellew, my buddy and best friend), together with his brother Sergio and Christian
García (son of Tío Juan García Casanova and Tía Valerie) are living in Tucson, Arizona. Rodrigo Sáez and Charlie Machuca,
two of my other buddies are here in Chile, I believe, as well as Rodrigo's sisters Marisol and Lorena. A few months ago I was
shocked by Alessandro Marini's tragic passing away in an aircraft accident down south, and I also heard that Cristián
Garreaud had died, if so, what a great pity. Pinocho (Reynaldo) Chellew, his elder brother Pituso (Alfredo III) and Tíos Anita
and Guati (Alfredo II) are in Anto, as well as Jackie Stoppel I believe. Alicita and Pitusa (Anita) Chellew are here in Santiago. I
heard that Gillian Hurley, Manduco Álvarez are here in Chile. Manduco's brother Marco Antonio is the General Manager of
DICOM, and never again I did hear of their sister Alejandra (Cana), classmate of mine. Erik Nielsen and his brother Charlie
are also here, Erik in Pirque. All the Tschichow girls (Natasha, Kira and Irina) I think they're here also. I'm not totally sure but
I think that Rainy (Reinhold) Paulsen, after living in the Canary Islands, then in Iquique, is now here in Santiago.
Unfortunately, I never heard again about the other Chilean kids: Kareen Paulsen (Rainy's cousin), Mariana Domic, Marcela
Monje, Luis Cortés or Gloria Montenegro. Regarding the other "gringo" kids I know nearly nothing about what became of
them: Louis and Bobby Hamilton, Suzanne Laurich, Jessie Fahm, Deborah Tietjen (for whom I had the biggest crush ever),
David Letchford, Richard and Martin Kirk, Greg Stansbury, Dicky Clark, Dirk Williams, Brian Burke, Kenneth and Theresa
Karp, and others that I now don't recall...

Hi Charles: First, Happy New Year to you and your family.
Am back home after being away for about 2 months and have a lot to catch up
with. Enjoyed your latest Chilex Weekly and answered your Chuqui Group poll
today.
Through Timeline in the Chilex Weekly tried to update a few people on three
photographs but was unsuccessful on some of them. The photos I am referring
to is Foreign School 1938 & 1945 and the Chilex Club Party in 1945. The
updates were with information I got from Genevieve (Genevieve Antonic
LaMotte) and whereever I was successful I have used (GAL) to identify her
information. As I am unsure whether the info went through or not, will try
again tomorrow, but meanwhile is there any other place where I could update
(outside of the Chilex Weekly)?

No sé si ustedes sabrán, pero el campamento de Chuquicamata está próximo a
desaparecer, esto es debido a la alta contaminación existente.
Por casualidad ingresé a su página WEB y grata fue mi sorpresa al
encontrarme con fotografías de antaño de Chuquicamata. Un diario local está
editando fotografías antiguas de Chuquicamata, pero las que ustedes publican
no las tienen, les agradecería que me pudiesen enviar todas las fotografías
que ustedes puedan tener, sería su eterno agradecido; además si conocen
otras páginas WEB relacionado con el tema (Chuquicamata) me informaran.

Hi -
This is Patricia Noe, Chuquicamatina.
I'm in the Chuqui yahoo group and went out to your website and noticed that
you do 'travel assistance'. Is that still the case? With all this talk about
Chuqui going away - physically and in name - I have a burn to go there next
year and say my goodbyes as well as reconnect while there is something to
reconnect to.
I was born in Chuqui in 1954 and left in 1963 to go to Peru. I went back to
Santiago for High School, and then continued on from there to Guatemala, and
eventually the U.S. I'm currently living in Atlanta, Georgia.
I love seeing the emails about all that is going on - although I don't
remember all the people. I don't know if it's because I left so young, or
because it's not my generation [Image] or just the old age thing. I have to
say that it feels wonderful to be back in touch. It has reinstated my sense
of belonging and fueled the Chuquicamatina in me...
I hope to hear back from you...

He leído con preocupación el mail que ha enviado Carmencita y quiero
aclararles lo siguiente:
El nombre de nuestro querido CHUQUICAMATA no ha cambiado. Lo que cambió fue
la razón social de la Empresa, que antes era Codelco Chile y ahora es
Codelco Norte. Como ustedes saben, a travéz de todos los años de
funcionamiento que ha tenido esta Empresa Minera, ha ido cambiando de dueños
y con ello ha cambiado nombre. Otras veces ha cambiado de nombre por razones
organizacionales, como ha sido en este caso. Ustedes recordarán que antes
era la Chilex Exploration Company. Bueno, el nombre de la razón social
nunca ha variado el nombre geográfico de lo que es Chuquicamata. Asi es que
cálmense y sonrian nuevamente, ok?
He intentado enviar varios mail al grupo. Pero por alguna razón que
desconozco, solamente me es posible recibir los mails que los integrantes
del grupo envian, pero no me es posible enviar o responder al grupo. Me
pueden ayudar con eso? Creo que mi mail no ha quedado habilitado para esa
función.

Yo he estado un poco ausente con mis notas porque no tengo ni tiempo de

hola sabes... soy un estudiante de diseño grafico de la cuidad de
antofagasta, chile, egresado y mi tesis se trata de un cd interactivo que
contenga todo lo que fue la historia de chuquicamatael cual se llama
"Vestigios de Chuquicamata" Historia de una vida, pero desde el punto de
vista de las vivencias, de los recuerdos, las cosas cotidianas, y estoy
recopilando material tanto gráfico como histórico o testimonios de chuqui
desde tiempos pasados hasta ahora en su proceso de desaparición.
He leido los mensajes en la pagina y me gustaria si me pudieras ayudar en
algo con respecto a juntar material... tanto grafico como de testimonios ya
que las vivencias y experiencias personales son muy importantes para mi
proyecto.. además estoy brindando como agradecimiento a las personas que me
ayuden una copia de este cd que contendrá toda la historia de chuqui...
fotos videos del proceso de desáparición, fotos familiares, de
acontecimientos importantes.

Great to come across this page!
I looked with nostalgia at the pictures. I too went to the "Foreign School"
in Chuqui, "in the sands of the Atacama, stands a school house...". My name
is Cornelis Bosloper. My sister Jean and me lived in Chuquicamata between
1951 and late 1957, with a 1 year break about 1954. I got excited when I
recognised various names on the "list of people", kids who went to school
with me (in the same class).
Coming from post-war Europe then, from Holland, I was even then, at that
tender age, impressed with sharing the class with people from every country
on the globe.
We left Chuqui in Sept 1957, and did our secondary and tertiary education in
Holland.
I now live in Australia and my children went to school here again with
children from all over the globe.
My sister (Jean now calls herself Yanette) teaches in Brisbane, Australia. I
now live a few hours west of Sydney, also Australia, and work as a surveyor.
My wife and my email address is marijke.case@bigpond.com (my Dutch name is
Case) and you can put me, Cornelis Bosloper, on your list. And also my
sister Jean Bosloper.

Esta foto se realizó el 27 de noviembre por varios satélites de la NASA.
Muestra todas las regiones habitadas y deshabitadas del mundo.
La cantidad de luz vista representa el desarrollo o subdesarrollo de la
región.
De esta manera se puede ver cómo la luz se concentra en tres áreas
desarrolladas principales:
Norte-América, EuropaOcccidental y Japón mientras el sur se muestra en
oscuridad salvo las areas más desarrolladas como Australia,
Africa de Sur y Brasil).
Es muy interesante ver cómo la población de China está tan mal distribuida.
También es interesante observar cómo el 25% de los 6 mil millones de
habitantes en el mundo viven a lo largo de los litorales.
Mira con asombro el río Nilo literalmente plagado de luces.

Estimado Charlie que dios los acompañe en estos momentos y
siempre la fe invada sus pensamientos. Si bien ustedes no me conocen he
llegado a tener un sentimiento especial por ustedes al leer todos los días
los mensajes del grupo chuqui.
En este mail te envío fotos dramáticas de nuestro chuqui
querido, las tome este Viernes 22 de Marzo y se pueden ver camiones Haulpak
de 320 toneladas descargando por ambos lados del hospital. Espero no
molestar a nadie con estas fotos pero comprendo en carne propia lo
desagradables que son. Me invade un sentimiento de impotencia ver como
desaparecerá el lugar donde nací, me crié y fui feliz. Desde Antofagasta
estoy subiendo almenos dos veces al mes a chuqui y si lo deseas te puedo
enviar fotos de las casas que aún quedan en pie. Entiendo que para nadie es
fácil, pero no puedo dejar de ofrecerlo. Me despido deseándoles mis mejores
deseos de salud y de una buena convalecencia para ustedes.

Nice to hear from you, even if you call me Tyrant! Good luck with your new
computer and hope that when you retire you keep up with the Chilex Weekly.
Have relooked at all the updating I did yesterday and there was only one
grid that didn't want to interact with me and that is Grid 01. The grid has
4 people in it - the two ladies on the left Genevieve couldn't identify.
The gentleman on the right is George Adams and the lady on the right is Anna
Antonich (mother of Genevieve - GAL). Genevieve took prints of the 3 photos
home with her and if she identifies any more people she'll let me know.
The browser I use is Microsoft, but my computer is doing all kinds of
strange things lately - think I have a virus somewhere but haven't been able
to get rid of it yet. The local expert is out of town but will be back next
week.

de él. Naci y creci en Chuquicamata, mi señora tambien es Chuquicamatina y
amamos todo lo que tenga que ver con Chuquicamata. Ximena es profesora de
periodismo en la Universidad del Norte y yo soy Ingeniero Mecánico en Minera
Escondida, actualmente estamos radicados en Antofagasta, lugar en
donde actualmente viven muchos Chuquicamatinos. Hace poco hice una

He conseguido su dirección de correo en la página web de Charles Fisk sobre
Chuquicamata y por ello le escribo. Mi nombre es Alejo Gutiérrez Viñuales,
Geógrafo, vivo en Chuquicamata y estoy realizando mi tesis para optar al
grado de Magíster en Desarrollo Urbano. El tema de tesis tiene que ver con
Chuqui, sobre todo en el tema urbano y el crecimiento de la ciudad, con sus
campamentos y barrios.
Quería poder contactarme con usted, pues por la dirección de correo dedujo
que trabaja en la empresa del Ferrocarril Antofagasta Bolivia, aunque no sé
si en Calama o en Antofagasta, por lo que me gustaría contactarme con Ud. de
manera personal.
Muchos de los suscriptores de la página de Ch. Fisk me están colaborando en
mi trabajo, de alguna u otra manera, proporcionándome fotos, realizando
comentarios sobre el crecimiento de Chuqui, etc. Mi trabajo comenzó hace
tres meses atrás y estoy en la etapa de recolección de material, tanto
gráfico como bibliográfico, el cual está casi listo.
Bueno, espero que usted me pueda ayudar con esta investigación, estoy a la
espera de su respuesta. Muchas gracias.

enjoying a visit from Mila who came all the way from Mexico City where she
lives.
